Sunday we took the train to Richmond. The weather was perfect for a little stroll around town and a nice walk by the river. We stopped for lunch at a Bavarian restaurant right on the water - sausages and shandies, coming right up!
About a mile down the river is a National Trust site - Ham House.
This is their fire safety plan - these buckets would be filled with sand and hung up out of the way in the back hall. If a fire broke out they would get them down with a pole and start a human chain, first with the sand and then filled with water. We looked everywhere....no pole. Fortunately a fire did not break out while we were there.
They had a little beer tasting in the beer cellar...
We tried to imagine what it would be like to live in Ham House - first as the Duchess in her bath...
Then as the sad little scullery maid.
Ta ta! Come again soon!
