Saturday was a loooong day (Bill didn't mention the midnight train fiasco in Saturday's post because he wanted to end on a positive note but the train doors closed on a fairly large group of us trying to get off at Slough and took us all to Reading where we had to wait for the last train back. We wound up getting home at 12:30 rather than 11:00!) so we slept in on Sunday morning and didn't have much urge to travel. Fortunately there is plenty to do around home so we went to nearby Runnymede.
It had rained overnight and the day was a bit cloudy. It seemed appropriate to get dressed for mud. Bill noted that this is the most rugged outfit he has so I wanted to make sure it was highlighted on the internet. Not a speck of pink!
We were surprised to see that the site of the Magna Carta also includes a JFK Memorial. Bill is standing on the "Steps of Individuality" that lead up to the memorial. The land around it was given to the US so technically we were on American soil. Fortunately we didn't need our passports.
While Bill went for the rugged look, I chose "British Autumnal" with my fall colors and wellies.
This pavilion commemorates the signing of the Magna Carta. I guess I need to do a little research to understand why they decided to sign their constitution out in the middle of a cow pasture when there was a perfectly good castle near by.
We followed this up with Sunday Roast at a nearby pub (which was all renovated on the inside to be a little more upscale which is not my favorite - I prefer the old timber beamed low ceiling type pub) and then grocery shopping at Waitrose. Waitrose was a much more pleasant experience. The store itself is probably less than a mile from our house but because of the road configuration we have to drive 3.5 miles out of Windsor and into Eton to get home. Well worth it to avoid the hell of Tesco's on a Sunday afternoon.
