Borough Market

Hard to believe that there are still markets in London that we haven't been to, isn't it??  We've been slow to check out Borough Market because it's food centric and we figured it didn't make sense to go and shop for food on a Saturday morning and carry it around all day.  This weekend we decided we needed to check it out.  Verdict?  Loved it!!

The market is right near London Bridge and was already packed by the time we arrived.  There were stalls of food to eat there (cooked burgers, sausages, meat pies, etc) and food to take home (dried meats, cheese, jams, bread, pastry, fruit & veg).  Because we've got several tapas restaurants on our list of favorites, Bill has taken a real shine to cured meats.  So we took home lots of dried game - venison, rabbit, wild boar, etc.

For lunch we had a duck sandwich - from this vat of cooked and shredded duck.  The server was actually very friendly to Dr. Dibley, who came long for the ride, although the picture doesn't quite look like it.  (It looks more like she is telling us to get our dirty sock puppet out of her f*cking duck pot, doesn't it?)  I washed it down with sangria.  Yum.
Then Mr. Dibley wanted an ice cream.  His little arms make it impossible for him to hold the cone so Bill and I had to hold it for him.  Best salty caramel ice cream ever!!

Did you know that a springbok was a small South African antelope?  I really wanted to take home some of the exotic burgers but we just didn't have a way to keep them fresh all day long.  We also don't have a grill here to do them justice.  Some how it just doesn't seem right to cook up a water buffalo burger in a frying pan.

Cured meats - 3 for 10 GBPs.  Bill is like a kid in a candy store.

I couldn't bear to leave without at least a few cheeses.  And of course it requires a lot of tasting to pick out which ones to bring home.  That drink in my hand is my first ever Pimms!!  I still have no idea what Pimms is but it tasted quite nice and refreshing.

I didn't notice this at the time but it looks like we are bring served cheese by a mime.  (That is probably the only acceptable use for a mime since in generally they are creepy.)
We took home a big bag of goodies and made our own fabulous tapas dinner in Eton last night.
