There aren't many central London museums left that we haven't seen (although there IS a museum of dentistry that we haven't visited…clearly not many here have) so last Sunday we took the Victoria line out to the very last stop in Walthamstow to check out the William Morris Gallery.
If you think you don't know who William Morris is, just check out the designs. Wallpaper, tiles, fabric…he was the king of modern decorating.
The pattern on the left was the traditional Victorian home wallpaper pattern.
The pattern on the right is William Morris - shaking things up with his new fangled look!
His green velvet was used on the Titanic.
I actually have no idea what this war poster has to do with William Morris. But I love a good bayonet scene.
There was a bizarre number of children at the museum. If you had children would you think to bring them to a design museum? Turns out the answer is yes. The museum is free and they set up all sorts of stations for kids. We didn't take any photos of these kids, of course, because we didn't want the parents thinking that we were kidnappers - frankly I have no idea how they didn't run into any of shots since they were circling us like electrons.
Oh, to have been a rich Victorian housewife let loose in William Morris' shop. "I'll have two of those, and four of those, and many yards of that….Put it on my husband's account!"
It's interesting to see that I have my sun glasses on my head considering it turned into another rainy day. Well, only the part when we were actually outside. Once we got home (drenched) the sun came out.
